In the 1930s America was deep in the depression, Unemployeement was high; and millions gathered around their radios to listen to Rosevelt's "Fireside chats". Later they would listen to two black faced entertainers, "Amos n Andy". Radios were so valuable to people that they would sell their beds or their bathtubs, before they would sell their radio to make the rent. Not all enterainment was provided by the radio. eventually as the hardships of the depression lifted, people bought record players and records. Although the sell of records dropped from the millions to 1.6 million in 1932. Some of these records were risque and would never be heard on radio.They were sold "under the counter" and played at private parties.
Actress Sara Burkett (Pictured at right), will be your tour guide on the "Dirty Thirties". The show will begin airing in September 2002 on channel 74. The first two shows will cover the Harlem Reniassance and it's decline. The last show will discuss the folk religion called "Hoodoo" and Hoodoo references that are still found in blues music. During each of the six shows five records will be played that were recorded in the 1920s or 1930s. The songs played will be reflective of the material presented. |
